How to make the most of a holiday at home
You’ve worked hard this past year and now you’re finally on holiday. But there is nowhere to go. As adventurous creatures, having a holiday at home may pale in comparison to our previous jet-setting lifestyles. Even without travel bans, the reality is we can’t always afford to travel to far-off destinations each year.
A holiday doesn’t have to be to a faraway destination. It is a time where you can unwind, reset and catch up on things you may have missed. But that doesn’t mean a holiday at home has to be boring. A change is still a change, it involves finding the right activity closer to home.
If you’re looking for some inspiration or ideas to pass the time, consider what you love, like and enjoy doing. But maybe, some of the best things to do are the ones you haven’t explored yet.
Revive, rejuvenate and reconnect
Now that you’re finally on your holidays. What do you do? Here are my top 20 fun things to do at home:
- Explore your neighbourhood on your own peddle power – find a local park and hire a bicycle.
- Find a spot only the locals know and get close to nature at a hidden away beach or nature reserve.
- Relax with a good book at the beach.
- Spend time with the kids and learn something together. Try that new recipe you’ve always wanted to do.
- Try your hand at a new water sport – fishing, snorkelling, scuba diving, surfing, kayaking or paddleboarding.
- Test your fear of heights and have a go at rock climbing or bouldering.
- Pack a picnic basket and find a shady spot under a tree.
- Choose between backyard cricket or soccer.
- Take up a new hobby and reduce your environmental impact at the same time. Create your own candles, beeswax wrappers, homemade cleaning products.
- Instead of choosing takeaway, opt to sit in and watch the world go by.
- Learn something about where you live, be a tourist in your own home city and visit a museum or local art gallery.
- Rediscover your old clothes, find something you haven’t worn in a long time and organise a night out with friends.
- Potter around the garden and grow herbs on your window sill, or talk to some patient ferns.
- Sip cocktails by the pool but make sure you don’t fall in.
- Discover a new restaurant or bar.
- Put your dancing shoes on and dance the night away.
- Love sport? Get your mates together and watch a game together.
- Reward yourself TLC – a massage or facial will do fine.
- Declutter – there is no better time than the present to get rid of things you have been holding onto.
- Binge-watch your favourite tv show.
Remember, taking time to re-energise and connect with your friends and family is important. Both to your mental and physical wellbeing and sanity. We longer need to wait a full year to go past before taking that well-deserved break. And the best part of a homestay is you can continue these activities on any day of the week.
Happy Holidays!
